2010 Selbach-Oster Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese
Full-bodied, lightly to moderately sweet, well balanced, elegant, with good underlying acidity. Shows notes of apples, blueberries, tropical fruits, and minerals. Very good/excellent.
1998 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Ruppertsberger Hoheburg Riesling “P.C.”
Gardenia, apple, peach, mineral, and lightly earthy-scented nose. Medium to full-bodied, somewhat round, fleshy, very elegant, dry, and nicely balanced, with good underlying acidity and gentle, rather chalky minerality. Tastes of green apples, passion fruit, honeydew, golden raisins, nutmeg, and green spice. Excellent.
Some rather quick notes from a rare tasting of Franken wines at The Spirited Gourmet, Belmont, MA, last Friday:
2010 Winzerkeller Sommerach EG Weissburgunder Trocken “Edition St. Valentin”
Medium-bodied, bone dry, correct, agreeable, but not especially exciting. Unlike the other two wines from this co-op, this came in a Bordeaux-style bottle rather than a bocksbeutel.
2009 Winzerkeller Sommerach EG Sommeracher Katzenkopf Silvaner Trocken
A medium-bodied, bone dry, crisp Silvaner, with typical Franken Silvaner aromas/flavors. Good everyday wine.
2009 Winzerkeller Sommerach EG Sommeracher Katzenkopf Domina Trocken
I wasn’t expecting much from this wine, but thought that it was the most interesting of the three wines that I sampled from this co-op. Domina is a cross between Pinot Noir and Portugieser, and is mostly planted in Franken. Medium-bodied, dry, lightly earth, rather meaty, with cherry and mixed berry notes. Well balanced, with moderate acidity and smooth tannins. Good+.
