WTN: Some more 2011 Germans

by Bill Hooper » Sat Mar 17, 2012 1:39 pm

2011 Mueller-Catoir Weissburgunder Trocken (black label) Pfalz, Germany 12,0% alc.

The 2009 was a little reductive and never really came around, but the 2010 was a fabulous value. If the '10 Haardter wasn't such a great wine for 3 more Euros, the former would've been my house Pinot Blanc.

This 2011 is creamy -a little heftier texturally without the juiciness and length of 2010 and is again slightly reductive (though much less so than '09). Even so, it is a nice wine with plenty of pear and apple fruit, mild floral aromas and no absence of acidity. I'm looking forward to trying the other M-C Weissburgunder wines, but for 50 cents more, the Bergdolt that I had last week is my clear favorite at this early stage for QPR Pinot Blanc.

2011 Bernhart Sauvignon Blanc Trocken -Pfalz, Germany 12,5% alc.

Apricot, lemon grass and green bell-pepper. I was told it was a very good, very 'international' Sauvignon, which I guess it is. I'd personally like a little less Sauvignon Aroma and a little more gooseberry, but the finish was clean and plenty acidic.

2011 Bergdolt St. Lamprecht Duttweiler Mandelberg Riesling Kabinett Trocken -Pfalz, Germany 12,0% alc.

Very good. Very clean, long and citrusy. Lime, grapefruit with lots of mineral, but the aromas are also held-in check a little at this point. I'd expect that to change with a little rest. Very strong QPR and again, nice acidity for 2011.

Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill -

Thank you for the 2011 update. I've never tried a German Sauvignon Blanc, although Terry Theise imports one from Hexamer that is supposed to be nice.

Still hoping to come across something from Bergdolt one of these days.
