Which Ridge Zin?

by Peter May » Sun Mar 11, 2012 11:44 am

Your advice please. I have a choice of

Ridge Lytton Springs 2009
Ridge Geyserville 2009

both priced the same. So which one do you recommend - and why?

I generally prefer Geyserville to Lytton Springs. It more often has better bones than the Lytton. I suspect it's that Geyserville has more carignan in it than Lytton. If you want a Zin blend with more zin-berry, then go for the Lytton.
The differences aren't great, and they're definitely tucked behind the Ridge-ness.

Do what I do - buy 6 of each and stick them in the cellar for 6-10 years. I think Lytton Springs is a little lighter and earlier maturing; the Geyserville has a bit more stuffing. But they're both darned good wines. I have a slight preference for the Lytton Springs, but I'll happily (and do) drink either.

I'm with Ted. Both good. Lytton Springs is usually ready to drink sooner than the Geyserville but even it benefits from 5-10 years in the cellar. I slightly prefer the Lytton Springs, maybe because I have a longer history with it,

I agree with all of the above, and have often bought both. I've not tasted the 2009 Lytton, but the Geyserville is really special.

FWIW, the '09 LS got much higher praise from the press and is virtually unobtainable in many places in the US. I have 6 of each! :D

Two critics I've seen are Wine Advocate (Galloni) 95 for the LS and 94 for the Geyserville, and IWC (Raynolds) 93 for the Lytton and Geyserville not included in tasting notes. So high points from relatively less pointy people. Like Tom, I've bought both, but haven't tasted the Lytton Springs. If it is as good as the Geyserville that would certainly suffice.
