WTN: 2005 Loring Wine Co. Garys' Vineyard Pinot

by Jenise » Sat Mar 10, 2012 1:53 pm

Color: medium mauvish brownish red. Good minerality and acid but somewhat light and past prime in the fruit department (not unexpected, Brian does make his wine to be drunk on the young side), so better as a food wine than a sipper at this point. Started fading about an hour after opening. Note to self: start on the 06's!

Oh oh. I still have a bottle of this left. Time to check in.

Is this under screwcap? If so, wouldn't it be expected to last a bit longer?

Drank my last bottle of this in 2010. While I liked the restraint in the 2005s, they never really seemed to be in Brian's wheelhouse.

Yes, screwcap. No exceptions on any Lorings, is there? Anyway, it's just the winemaking style, and perhaps the vintage. I've had some exceptional Loring Garys' five, six years out. This one, at seven, was just a tad long in the tooth.

I'm sipping this right now. Color-wise this does suggest some age, but the aroma is nice with spice and some dustiness. Plenty of fruit, but leaner than this probably was in its youth. It's tart red fruit, cherry-like, and quite tasty. The finish is a bit short, with most of the flavor on the mid-palate. So, my experience with this is different than yours. Maybe that snowstorm on your move had some effect. :!:

As has almost always been the case with Loring Pinots, I like them better at age 4-6 than in their ponderous youth (my favorite remains the 1999 Sharon's).

A bit of an up-date. We had about 1/3 of a bottle left to try today. The acidity is overwhelming if we try to just sip. With a hotdog with tomatoes and onion and pineapple, it is drinkable and still good. Given all the manipulation Brian admits to doing, I wonder if this was too zealously acidulated?

prompted by this post, I went down to cellar to see if I had any 2005 Loring Garys?? Garys is usually my favorite LWC PN. none to be found, did come up with 2005 Rosella's, Clos Pepe and Cargassachi..Since Rosella's has seemed to me over the years to be the closest to the Garys in flavor profile, (as well as the sourcing connection) I popped the Rosella's..The aromatics were muted compared to prior vintages and the acidity more pronounced..wine improved a bit the next night but still not the ebullient, hedonistic Rosella's that I have adored in the past.. Drink em if ya got em..Probably should have opened it several years earlier.
Would have posted this earlier but my computer crashed and only got it up and back running this afternoon

opened 2005 LWC Caegasacchi PN last night, finished it tonight..ok, not great..Peter Cargasacchi's Vyds are further south , in the Sta Rita Hills, as opposed to Sta Lucia Highlands/Monterey area for Garys and Rosella's.. Drink up if ya got em, will not improve with age..OTH? other?..wd probably say shd have been opened sooner, can't pinpoint TCA, other defects, etc re the wine, just that it wasn't terrific, kinda faded if anything.

The Loring thread that will not end.. Last night we cracked another 2005 Loring.. I still have a Keefer Ranch and a Naylor Dry Hole from 2005 to open. So, this thread is not dead!!

  • 2005 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (3/20/2012)

I really like Rosella's fruit in general. This has been the best of the '05 Lorings I have tried over the last couple of months. Acid and fruit are well-balanced (whereas the Garys' was overly acidic for the fruit). This showed a little age in color, but on the palate still lively and fresh and quite enjoyable with left-over corned beef and cabbage. This has shed whatever baby fat it might have had and has reached a nice level of maturity. (91 pts.)

Wait a minute. Forget about the wine: we need to talk about this hot dog. Is the house DietzDog or were you just emptying the refrigerator?

Actually, they were spicy Italian sausages, which Lorena insists on calling hot dogs.....
