American Grand Cru

by Peter May » Sat Mar 10, 2012 6:38 am

What are your thoughts on The American Grand Cru Society which intends granting American Grand Cru status to vineyards.

They say - on their information-lite site at www.americangrandcrusociety.com

"Our priority is to provide wine consumers at-large, unbiased recognition for best in class American vineyards and the wines produced from them expressing unique quality from that specific place of origin. This will include vineyards and producers who best represent the place of origin for the wines they represent."

My first quibble is they do not define what they mean by vineyard.

I don't understand your problem, Peter. Isn't there are commonly understood dictionary definition?

It looks like a one-man show by a self-described entrepreneur, and I couldn't find where he tells us who he is (although he shows his picture and gives a brief resume and tells us he has a wife named Kate).

In principle, I'm not sure what I think of the underlying idea. Grand Cru designations, when generally accepted, tend to drive up demand and prices. Given the overheated market that already exists and that has pretty much generated a de facto American classification as it is, do we need more?

I'm sorry, but the self-inflicted job title "Professional Wine Coach", made me spit tea.

So $25 gets one a membership certificate "suitable for framing." $50 gets that certificate, plus a "30 minute wine coaching session." Jenise, when is your birthday, maybe we can all chip in and get you a premium membership!

Wonder how much Mudd (Channing?), Linden, Galitzine paid to be designated Grand Cru by this bozo?

Vineyards designated as “American Grand Cru” have to “earn it” they do not “pay for it”. (Well that’s what it says anyway. I guess that means they could also lose it). Like Robin, I would like to know who are the “panel of experts” designating these American vineyards as “Grand Cru”?

Could you spring for the Trade Membership? That rotating banner with my name on it would look mighty fine!

There is no way we know enough about more than a handful of US vineyard sites to even consider such a ridiculous idea as this one. Sure spots such as the Monte Bello etstae vineyard, maybe the original Inglenook estate site, or Martha's Vineyard make sense, but the overwhelming majority are too new to have any idea as to their real status as vineyard sites versus place where somebody grows really ripe grapes that somebody turns into really rich wine.

I'll chip in for Jenise's membership. When's Robin's birthday? When's Bueker's birthday? It's the "least" we can do for our fearless moderators! :D
