Recs for inexpensive Spanish Grenache

by Brian Gilp » Fri Mar 02, 2012 12:30 pm

My wife and I ate at Jaleo in DC a few weeks back and the wonderful waiter recommended a very reasonable priced Grenache called Xiloca. The wife loved it and luckily found a local shop to bring it in for her at $120 a case so all is good I thought. Well now she wants to know about other Spanish Grenacha that she might like and I am stumped. I don't really like Grenache and I don't know much about Spanish wine so if anyone has some thoughts I would love to hear them.

Marco Real, Tres Ojos, and apparently Bitch is now Spanish rather than Australian. All $10 or under.

I have found Las Rocas and Evodia to be good values.

I also like the Evodia which, I believe, is tank fermented with no oak treatment, which produces a brighter wine than most other spanish grenache.

Brian, look for Ordonez imports. Pretty reliable and his Grenachas are usually good.

The Borsao Tres Picos is another popular Garnacha (I tend to prefer their cheaper bottlings, less overbearing, most of which are mostly Grenache).
What was the Xiloca like? Spanish Garnacha comes in lots of styles, might lead to better suggestions.
