Eucalyptus and Whites??

by TomHill » Mon Oct 30, 2006 5:39 pm

Since we be on the subject...I've never observed, in my recollection, that minty/menthol/eucalyptus character in white wines. Wonder why??
I would guess that whate wine have limited skin contact during their production, so don't have the opportunity to dissolve the eucalyptus resin on the skins, but that's just a guess.

Tom, recently we ran into that. It was a Chinese vintage chardonnay by what is one of the winery the Speck recently showed on it's cover, Grace. Tasted more like a Sauv Blanc that someone had stirred with eucalyptus leaves than chardonnay, but it was otherwise okay with good depth and balance.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
