So...What Does Coach K Drink???

by TomHill » Sat Feb 18, 2012 4:21 pm

Saw an interview in one of those newspaper magazines last week (Athalon Sports) that had an interview w/ Duke's Coach K. One of the questions was "What is your greatest indulgence"? He responded..."My wine collection".
So....anybody knows what Coach K likes to drink??

I'm with Kelly and David.
Now what Roy Williams might drink would interest me.
I think Dean is a whiskey man.

Mostly big names in California wines--Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi (original winery), Caymus Special Selection and Duckhorn unless his tastes have branched out since the 90's.

Well at least he turned his whole family on to wine and promotes wine as for everyone--not just the elite. (However you have to be somewhat "elite" to afford the top wines from Caymus, Robert Mondavi reserve Cabs, etc.)

Back in '91, I was drinking wines from all those producers, too, as they were: a) far more affordable than today and b) much more interesting than the wines they make today. Caymus Estate Cabs from '78-'91 were staples in my cellar (never bought a SS, though) and Mondavi Reserves were also very classy wines. Silver Oak in the Justin Meyer era was an interesting example of CalCab and Duckhorn 3 Palms was one of the few CA Merlots that I had any interest in. If Coach K has had a palate shift anything like my own, he's probably drinking '59 Latour and DRC today (he's got a whole lot more $$$ than me).

Well, Mark...I...ahem...followed Caymus from the very start...the '72 vintage. That's back when I actually drank/collected Calif Cabs.
They were quite good...and affordable. The the $$'s started going up, the oak started going up, and the quality started plumetting...
so I just moved on. Plus the very rude treatment on a visit from ole CharlieWagner sealed the deal & I never looked back.

To me, the big shift came with the '91 vintage, and what I saw as a shift of control from Ol' curmudgeonly Charlie (elsewhere I've described my initimidation as a 21 y.o. tasting with him) to Chuck and his preference for bigger, more flashy wines. They led the way, too, for the crazy price inflation of the early '90s (I think that the '91 SS was one of the first wines to go to triple digits). I still have some great memories of opening Caymus cabs for friends from France and Quebec. Lots of disbelief that it was a CA wine.
