Help with the Beerenausles on the LoS wine list

by Brian Gilp » Tue Feb 14, 2012 8:53 am

I am going back to LoS this Friday and Saturday so started looking at the list that is available on-line. Copied below is what is available in Beerenauslese once I elminate all bottles over $200. The problem is that elminating those over $200 also eliminated most of the houses I know. The 1983 Abtsberg in bold caught my attention but I don't know if 1983 was a good year. I konw that 1976 was suppose to be superb and seem to recall that 1971 was also considered great. I am wondering if one of those may be a better option.

von Simmern was still great back in the early '70s.

Personally I would go for a nice bottle of auslese, as it will match the food better IMO, but if BA is what you seek then von Simmern could be very fine, and 're: the Grunhaus, 83 was indeed a very good year.

I have found most '76s to be concentrated botrytis juice with little or no Riesling-ness, so I am not a fan.

Thanks David. The Beerenausles is being considered for if we have guests joing us for one of the nights as to the best of my knowledge they have not had a BA much less one with some age.

The Auslese that I was looking at is the Reinhold Haart Piesporter Goldtropfchen 2002 $75

I'm little help, but while I've not had the BA an 83 MaxGrun Abtsberg Auslese was fantastic a few years ago.
How big a party? Do they have a 375 list? Because for me a little BA goes a long way
Look forward to your report afterwards, no matter what you choose!

the 375 portion of the list is below. from my limited knowledge here the 750s looked like a better deal.

1567 JB Becker Wallufer Berg Bildstock, Rheingau 1976 110
1502 Knyphausen Erbacher Michelmark, Rheingau 1975 150
1753 Kurt Darting Ungsteiner Bettelhaus Rieslaner, Pfalz 1996 95
1592 Muller-Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe, Pfalz 1976 150
1576 Nagler Rudesheimer Berg Rottland, Rheingau 1976 125

I'd just ask Bank when I got there...or give him a call to hold a bottle, if there is a concern what you want won't be there..

Thanks. I had assumed this was an auction or somesuch. The prices seem way too good for a restaurant list!

Funny thing is that when looking at the list, I think the multiplier has increased. Most are now at about 2X retail. My memory as flawed as it is seems to remember a time when that was closer to 1.5X.

Well that 2002 Haart auslese you are eyeing cost $24/375ml at the estate in 2003, so I think you are still getting a great deal considering everything.

What I found for pricing on the Haart is not really a good datapoint as its out of stock but K&L shows it at 28 marked down from 38. http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1005659. Really not worried about it as 2X is cheap compared to the strip and the food is great

Hi Brian -

I know next to nothing about Adolf Rheinart, aside from that they no longer exist. Anyway, I did have their 1971 Ockfener Bockstein Herrenberg Riesling Auslese (#20) two years ago, and it was still drinking very nicely. Based on that, I would imagine that the Ockfener Bockstein BA in the same year would be quite good.

Enjoy your dinner!
