SFChron: Sicilian White Wines.....

by TomHill » Mon Feb 13, 2012 10:08 am

Interesting article in SFChron on wines from Sicilian white grapes:
SFChron:SicilianWhiteWines

Grillo, Inzolia, Catarratto, Carricante, Minella Bianca...all grapes I'm not familiar with. Sounds like they're moving into the orange wine direction as well. The few Sicilian whites I've had have not impressed...seemed to be on the coarse/earthy side...must be that terroir thing all the geeks talk about.

Orangesque, so might not be of broad appeal, but the Marco de Bartoli Zibibbo (local name for Muscat of Alexandria) mentioned in the article is probably my top wine so far for 2012.

Thanks for posting Tom. I waxed lyrically about whites from Sicily in recent S Italy Wine Focus here and posted a few TNs. This one was very good.....>

WTN: `09 Firriato Ansonica Chiarmonte Sicilia.

Purchased for this months Focus. Good natural cork, $20 Cdn, Lot 0179. 13% alc, served well chilled which seemed to help.

C. Very light lemon, no green.
N. Some spice and minerals. Lemon, floral, peach, lots going on here.
P. Initial entry---good structure, served in a big glass to give it some air, vibrant, just slightly off-dry. "Pear and lemon" from across the table. Medium acidity, no nutty tones, went quite well with shrimp skewers. Clean finish here, very good wine.

Hi Tom -

Thank you for linking to the article. I've liked the COS Pithos - both the "regular" and the "orange" versions, but the latter certainly isn't for everyone.

Tasca d'Almerita has never really impressed me - clean and correct wines, without much going on in them.
