WTN: Two New DryCreekVnyds...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Feb 12, 2012 7:40 pm

We tried Sat night two new DryCreeks just off the boat:
1. DryCreekVnyds Taylor'sVnyd Musque DryCreekVlly/SonomaCnty SauvBlanc (14.3%) 2010: Light yellow color; rather herbal/aspargras/grassy some fragrant/muscatty/floral/pear fairly perfumed nose; tart/lean light grassy/aspargras/SB very light floral/muscatty/appley flavor; med. rather grassy/herbal/aspargras light floral/muscatty finish; seems lighter & less intense Musque character and more 4-square SauvBlanc in character than previous editions; nice SauvBlanc but just that. $25.00
_______________
2. DryCreekVnyds Zin SomersRanch/DryCreekVlly/SonomaCnty (14.5%; 430 cs) 2009: Med.dark color; lovely bright raspberry/blackberry/Zin very spicy some dusty/old vines light Am.oak/vanilla nose; tart bright/zippy very spicy/raspberry/Zin/blackberry light vanilla/oak/pencilly flavor w/ light tannins; very long very spicy/raspberry/Zin/blackberry light Am.oak/vanilla/pencilly finish w/ light tannins; a quintessential DryCreekVlly Zin some in the style of the Nalles. Bit pricey at $38.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Sauv Musque: Thiis is a clone of SauvBlanc that was discovered hiding on the UC/Davis FPS list by DougMeador/Ventana, back in the '80's. He was making SauvBlanc at Ventana, it showed a lot of herbaceous character, so he took a high-dive on the SauvMusque. He liked the result. It tends to have less of the herbaceous/grassy character of SauvBlanc and more of a perfumed/floral almost muscatty character.
This '10 version from DryCreekVnyds was a bit disappointing. It seemed to be not as intense, not as much floral/aromatic character, a bit more simple than their previous ones. I'll give it another dry in a month or two to see if it's developed any.

I get the club from DCV, and I picked mine up today, at the winery, so I got to taste without using up my bottles. :)
I agree about the Musque. It was sort of ordinary, at least the tasting room bottle, and they were busy enough that it wasn't stale or anything.
The Somers is, I think, priced to the market. It's a really nice old-fashioned, bright Zin, not overpowering at all. I'll drink it and enjoy it, but I think David Coffaro's Block 4 is a better expression of DCV.
