WTN: Calera Aligote MtHarlan '09..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Feb 07, 2012 12:22 pm

Tried this last night w/ dinner:
1. Calera Aligote MtHarlan (330 vines grafted in 2004 & 2007; 116 cs; 6.18 tons/acre; pH: 3.40; www.CaleraWine.com) 2009: Light gold color; strong mineral/chalky light floral/jasmine/apple blossom very attractive/fragrant nose; quite tart mineral/chalky/light earthy some lush/rich floral/apple-pear blossom flavor; med.long tart/tangy rich chalky/mineral/bit earthy/metallic spicy/floral/apple-pear blossom finish; doesn't have the strong earthy/metallic/steely character of Fr.Aligote; speaks of Calif w/ the chalky/mineral character of Aligote; quite a nice wine when you just want a white to drink. $28.00 (AV)

Well, Brian.....you could pour it into a glass, sit there and contemplate it a bit, pontificate over it awhile;
write up a detailed TN using all kind of effusive/florid/overblown/tedious/pompous-ass prose; go onto the InterNet
and thoroughly research the origins of Aligote; call up your wine merchant and order a case; call up some friends
and ramble on ad naseum about how good it is; and then finally sit down and drink it with your meal.
Last night w/ my simple arugula/basil salad; I just wanted some white wine to drink and grabbed this btl
w/o even thinking about it. It was sufficiently good that I decided to share a TN on it.

Whew. I was worried about much worse. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

6.18 tons per acre? Really? And they want $28 a bottle for it? Wow, gotta get me some Aligote!!!
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Yup, Steve...that yield kinda stood out in my mind as well. Yet the wine had plenty of concentration and didn't seem dilute.
I've heard they get over 8 tons/acre off the Aligote in LeMontrachet!!! Damned French ho's.

I missed that. If I did the math correct that is a little over 13 lbs per vine and the vines would be on 6 x 8 spacing. This is assuming 15 lbs per gallon.
