WTN: Two Haardter Rieslinge

2010 Weegmüller Haardter Herrenletten ‚Der Mineralische‘ Riesling Kabinett Trocken –Pfalz, Germany 11,5% alc.

Like all of Weegmüllers wines, this is aromatically uncluttered and pure with great fruit and length. It tastes and smells like the fruit and blossoms of peaches, apricots, and mirabelle plum. There is an implied sweetness even if it is technically dry and it has great reductive-winemaking brilliance –frisch und sauber. The flavor profile of these wines is unique and I’m not sure that you could mistake them for other Haardt properties. Even though my experience with the winery is limited to three or four vintages (all tasted within the last two years), they have made a lasting impression on me and I find them to wonderfully expressive wines of great value. Not as Grand perhaps as Müller-Catoir or Christmann, but definitely one of my local favorites.

2010 Peter Stolleis Haardter Herzog Riesling Kabinett Trocken –Pfalz, Germany 12,5% alc.

This is my first bottle from this winery. They have very good local distribution, but for some reason I’ve never felt inclined to pick one up. Shame on me as it’s very nice. Honey crisp apple, pear, melon. Not so floral as it is fruity. Very persistent and linear. It is also quite dry and the acidity pops like a firecracker. Very refreshing.

Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill -

Thank you for the interesting notes. Unfortunately, I have never had anything from Weegmuller yet, as they are not be distributed in Massachusetts right now, to the best of my knowledge. Hopefully, I'll find a bottle or two eventually - maybe in New York sometime.

Stolleis is a completely new name to me - glad to see that his wine exceeded your expectations.

Hi Andrew,

I went to a party last night where this wine was being poured again. Just as good the second time around. The Spätburgunder was also open, but I didn't get a chance to taste it. I didn't take notes, but I brought a bottle of 2009 Bassermann-Jordan Königbacher Ölberg Riesling GG. It was great. Nice texture -almost gritty with extract, but the wine still conveyed a sense of lightness and finesse -it was a good match with the Marc de Gewürztraminer washed Munster.

Cheers,
Bill
