WTN: excellent aglianico

De Angelis, Aglianico del Benebentano, 'Nero del Tasso, 2001

My first encounter with De Angelis and what a beauty: dark maroon, black cherry colored. Very aromatic, with tar, plum liquor, warm Christmas cake aromas. On the palate packed with sour cherry, sweet pomegranate molasses, granite. Very well-made with a sweet-sour quality to the flavors, a long finish of asphalt, and stocky man tannins that appear to be giving sway. Very nice. A-/A 13.5% Wish I had another bottle to try in 4-6 years.

Note: I cannot seem to find this wine imported anymore. Does anyone know why? It is a Marc De Grazia selection, but his website only lists De Angelis white being imported, not the aglainico.

Don't know about the Aglianico but I have the 2009 Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio red so there is more than white being imported. Purchased locally in southern Maryland so expect it should be widely available.
