opened up a varied selection of wines over the weekend. the 2009 rieslings were drank alongside one another...i preferred the S-F.

  • 2008 Jacques Puffeney Poulsard Arbois "M" - France, Jura, Arbois (1/22/2012)
This stuff is awfully good. The first thing that jumps out at you is its airiness. Wisps of dried roses, cranberries, herbs and minerals weave together in layers of flavors. Despite its weight this wine has beautifully vivid red fruit tones that speak to the quality of the fruit used. One of the more captivating wines from the Jura I've had. (92 pts.)
  • 2009 Schäfer-Fröhlich Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Nahe (1/22/2012)
Thought this was focused and taut with great energy and acidity. The flavors were complex and layered, featuring pineapple, pear and lychee. For a 2009, this showed surprising levels of acidity. Very nice. (91 pts.)
  • 2004 André-Michel Brégeon Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Gorges - France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine (1/21/2012)
Took some time to open up. Beautifully delicate nose of seawater, fresh herbs, citrus and crushed stones. This is as complex a muscadet as I've had with layers of lithe citrus, floral tones and crushed rocks. Is there a more perfect wine with fresh shellfish??? (92 pts.)
  • 2009 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Felsentürmchen Spätlese - Germany, Nahe (1/21/2012)
Incredibly expressive nose of tropical fruits - mango and peach especially. The palate was lush but had nice balance. The acidic grip to this wine seemed to have lessened a bit...but still a great wine. (90 pts.)

Hi Matthew -

Thank you for the notes. So far, the Puffeney Poulsards are my favorite wines from this grape.

Interesting comparison between the Dönnhoff and Schäfer-Fröhlich wines. I have not had either of these particular wines yet, but am glad that you enjoyed both of them.
