WTN: More MO wines - Jowler Creek Winery

by Ryan M » Thu Jan 19, 2012 11:50 pm

A relatively new winery in Platte County Missouri came to my attention, and my step-father and I finally got the chance to drop in and check it out. Nice operation, very well done wine; the winemaker is California trained. They tout themselves as Missouri's "premier sustainable" winery. We very much enjoyed tasting wines there, and took some home.

Jowler Creek Winery, Chambourcin, Platte County 2009
Oak and mixed berries. Pleasant, if perhaps unremarkable. ** [10/22/11]

Jowler Creek Winery, Norton, Platte County 2009
Fruity, tart juicy, plum, berry, and oak. An attractive, friendly style that will win people over to Norton. ** [10/22/11]

Jowler Creek Winery, Vignoles, Platte County 2010
Fruity, aromatic peach and pineapple, with a hint of nectar. Very nice. ** [10/22/11]

Jowler Creek Winery, Butterfly Blush, Missouri NV
Catawba and Vidal. Strawberry, peach, and citrus. Well done. A blush that would actually buy and drink - perhaps as an alternative to pink lemonade on a hot day. ** [10/22/11]

Jowler Creek Winery, Critter Cuvee, Missouri NV
Sweet peach, nectar, and citrus, but very light. * [10/22/11]

Jowler Creek Winery, Red Cock-a-Doodle-Do, Missouri/New York NV
Norton from Platte County and Concord from New York oddly enough, but this is actually well done, with nice cassis and brier notes. ** [10/22/11]

Jowler Creek Winery, Nort, Platte County 2010
A Norton port-style wine. Intense blackberry and cassis, high toned red fruit, raisin, chocolate, and tobacco leaf. This is without question the best port-style wine I've had from the Midwest, and is also one of the best Nortons I've had. Very, very nice. Can age well, I imagine. *** [10/22/11]

Interesting notes - thanks.

I've been thinking about trying a few Nortons again since that 1994 Horton I had back in November. It was a real head turner (spinner?), and renewed my faith in the variety.

I'm glad someone appreciated the notes, David. Thanks! I can understand Sam's reservations about posting on Midwestern wines, as you never quite know how people are going to react, so it's good to know it was a worthwhile effort.
