WTN: 2010 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py

by Salil » Thu Jan 19, 2012 9:34 am

Quite lean in contrast to the 2009, but no less impressive. The fresh cherry and pomegranate fruit's not as rich and exuberant as it was last vintage and instead it's already showing a range of compelling non-fruit flavours, with all sorts of bright floral, spicy, pine needle and mineral elements accenting the primary fruit. There's a sense of real transparency and lightness here, superb balance and impressive length.

Nice. Sounds great. Where did you get this? I've been eagerly anticipating it (as I do every year).

Thought about getting some, but there's only so mch $30+ Beaujolais I really want in my cellar.

Forget the cellar, how about in your mouth!!

What other $30+ Beaujolais do you prefer?

Is there that much of a qualitative difference between the $35 Foillards and the Beaujolais that Vissoux, Lapierre, Coudert and various others are producing for less (quite often in the low/mid 20s)?

I don't know about 'qualitative', it's a tricky concept to apply to wine pricing. But although Coudert is a screaming value that is almost criminal, I've always found Foillard to be a level above Lapierre, and Vissoux is not really my style. Thevenet is priced similarly to Foillard and when they show well I put them in the same ballpark, but Thevenet is more unstable.

In the grand scheme of things, you're right, there is a ridiculous amount of good Beaujolais at fair prices out there, so in some respects we're spoiled for choice.

Rahsaan,

I am a fan of the Jadot Beaujolais as well.

That said, it's not about which producer, but that I bought a bunch of 2009, and I prefer to space out my Beaujolais vintages a bit, rather than have multiple years coming into maturity/mandatory drinking at the same time.

Terry Theise once related this in one of his catalogs - a new vintage every 12 months is just too often.

thanks for the notes salil - will certainly be buying some of these. when talking about quality Beaujolais producers I like to throw Daniel Bouland into the hat too. Great stuff - all of which is <$25.

This is factual.

This is also factual.
