It had been over a year since I had a Silvaner from anywhere, so I was excited to see this wine in a local closeout rack. Franken is definitely my preferred region for this grape - sorry, Alsace.
Unfortunately, there are not a lot of Franken wines that get imported to the US - Hans Wirsching may be the most common. Although Loosen Bros. (think Dr. Loosen) was importing am Stein's wines for a very brief, am Stein is not currently being listed on the Loosen Bros. website as part of their portfolio.
2008 am Stein (Ludwig Knoll) Stettener Stein Silvaner Alte Rebe “Vinz”
The name “Vinz” refers to Vincenz Knoll - the son of Ludwig and Sandra Knoll, who currently run this estate. The wines labeled “Vinz” come from the best sections of Stettener Stein.
White peaches and bread on the nose, with a hint of herbs. Medium-bodied, lightly crisp, somewhat round, rather leesy, bone dry, with pear, apricot, yeast, and light mineral notes. Moderate cut/structure; good fruit and underlying acidity. Some cinnamon on the finish. Very good.
