Amusing, Hoke. I hope my wine talk doesn't put me above the 40 percentile. I usually only talk about wine with other wine lovers or when asked to express an opinion.

Hope you beat the odds, Dale! :D

Trillin didn't mention it in his article, but would the correlation increase greatly if the person subscribed to the Wine Advocate? 8)

How about subscribing to the WA AND subscribing to the interwebz discussion site?

I would suspect that the Wine Spectator carries a higher ACI quotient.

I am certain that if you asked ten folks that know me what my ACI is that you would get a fairly wide range. Not sure if I could get all the way into the 80s but that is where I see myself by the time I hit 70 (assuming I am still alive).

Technically speaking, ACIs are for behaviors not individuals.

Yes but what behaviors people have is not consistently shown to everyone they know. Therefore if one were to ask for feedback from a range of folks it should vary. Depending upon how much one shows or does not show to different levels of friends, co-workers, family, etc could make the range very wide.

That makes no sense.

According to the deep logic of Trillin's article, an individual either is or is not an asshole. The ACI is a method for determining whether an individual is an asshole by observing his/her behavior and fixing a range for the correlation between that behavior and whether an individual is an asshole. Individuals don't have scores or ranges, behaviors do.

It stikes me that the ACI is precisely like predicting the weather, e.g., given a particular combination of conditions, the likelihood of precipitation is X. It is exactly like that.

Re-read the article: "Among people who think of themselves as wine connoisseurs there’s a 61 percent ACI."

So I suppose you could stretch that to say that if someone knows you're a wine connoisseur they would give you an ACI of .61. But that doesn't really make sense to me. ACI is asshole correlation index. Behaviors correlate to assholes, not individuals. So it still strikes me as a mangling of the original term to give someone a 'score'. As the whole article was about behaviors and what that allowed the man to surmise about the individuals. Not what people who know someone well would 'score' their friend.

But hey, at the end of the day, there are better things to argue about.

The more important thing is that we are clearly an assembly of the 39%.

I just detest the whole idea of scoring people. I stick to the tasting notes.

What is your ACI if you know you are an asshole? What is your ACI if you think everyone else is an asshole? What is your ACI if you think only a certain group of people are assholes? What is your ACI for starting this thread? What is your ACI for responding to this thread? What is your ACI for responding to this thread more than once? One final question. Can you have a perfect ACI?

Ah, but it's not for you to assign your own ACI, it's for the observer/analyst to determine, James.

We'd have to take a survey of many people who know you and allow them to attach numbers to figure out your ACI, wouldn't we? 8)

(And I don't think anyone wants to even consider going down that road!)

My final question there fore stands? Can one obtain a perfect ACI? Is it something to shoot for? I mean what else do I have going for me?

If you treat each behavior as a probability then the answer is that you can not get a perfect score unless you exhibit a certain behavior that by itself has a 100 ACI. You can approach perfection but never reach 100 otherwise.
