Question for David Bueker

by JC (NC) » Sat Jan 14, 2012 5:27 pm

I have one bottle of the Josef Leitz Rudesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Spatlese 2009. I picked up the bottle the other day and saw a stream of tiny bubbles going up the side of the bottle (secondary carbonation?) Is this necessarily a fault (the bottle was on sale when I purchased it) or do you think the wine could be okay and just a little spritzig upon opening?
I also have one bottle of Donnhoff Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spatlese 2006. Is this likely to be in an awkward stage currently?
Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can impart.

Hi JC,
I’m not David, but yes your stream of tiny bubbles could be the result of ”bottle” fermentation. But it could also be the result of “trapped” CO2 just “escaping”. This absorbed CO2 gas in wine (really any gas for that matter) is very temperature sensitive. The colder the wine the more gas it could “hold” (the gas will move around less freely in a cold wine). As it “warms” up the less it could “hold” (the gas will move around more freely in the “warm” wine).

Salute

I am betting trapped CO2 in the Leitz. Not at all uncommon with his wines.

2006s are almost all in an awkward phase right now. I would hold off a bit.
