WTN: 2005 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Kabinett

by David M. Bueker » Thu Jan 12, 2012 12:51 pm

Ap #1 for those keeping score at home.

This was was good fun to drink - rich, fruity and not at all shut down (a worry with 2005 right now), but as I was drinking it I could not help wishing that it had some more acidity. As I get older and more set in my ways, I want kabinett to taste and feel like kabinett used to in the old days.

Ah well - more 2008s for me.

Bravo David for speaking up. I too have a problem mentioning the draw of a good Kabinett when helping out downtown. I need to taste before I can push!

Yeah, it's really a Spätlese as you say. But a really fun, well balanced and downright delicious one and I'm glad I have a couple of bottles still remaining.

I'm beginning to wonder if the 1998 Christoffel Erdener Treppchen is the last actual kabinett in my cellar. From 1999 on the thread seems to have been lost.

Does anyone know if Vollenweider is no longer brought into the US? I'm having difficulty finding someone who has stock.

According to the Vollenweider website: Vineyard Research and Ewald Moseler (along with Bill Mayer's Age of Riesling) are importing Vollenweider.
