New Jacqueline Friedrich Book on the Loire

by Dan Smothergill » Tue Jan 10, 2012 5:24 am

Here is Jacqueline Friedrich's long awaited follow up to A Wine and Food Guide to the Loire, her classic published in 1996. Actually, this is only Volume 1 of a planned 3-volume set. The focus of this volume is the eastern Loire which Friedrich calls the Kingdom of Sauvignon Blanc. In addition to up-to-date coverage of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, there is extensive discussion of the ongoing renaissance in Menetou-Salon, Reuilly and Quincy. Friedrich is enthusiastic about the improved quality she finds throughout the region. This is a must (rather a book) for every Loire head.

Are there good pics and maps in the book? I find these essential and some otherwise good books are let down in this department, e.g. Paul Strang's on SW France.

Thanks for the heads up, Dan, I loved her earlier book so I'll look for this one.

Her first book on Loire was by far the best book I found about the region.

Looking forward to the rest of this series.

Dave is right. There are no pictures and the maps are too general to get you from one place to another. In addition to the coverage I mentioned earlier, there also are sections on Coteaux du Giennois, Chateaumeillant and the Vins de Pays of the Nivernais: Coteaux Charitois and Coteaux de Tannay. All in all, it's got to be the most comprehensive and up-to-date book on this section of the Loire.

I notice that the publisher's price is $7 more than Amazon's.

The lack of pics and maps bothers me. I can see her predicament, though, as a self-publisher because pics and maps must add considerably to the costs.

And to think that I complained about Paul Strang's book; the maps are poor but the pics are OK.

Yes, David, I have other maps but I find it helpful to have maps in a reference book showing where recommended estates are located. This is much easier than looking up a lieu-dit in the index (not always there if small) and then spreading out my Michelin map in order to locate it. And a lot of small French estates do not have websites or, when they do, often fail to provide adequate location and access maps.
