WTN: 1971 Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen Beerenauslese

by Paul Winalski » Sat Dec 31, 2011 10:14 pm

Full title of the wine: 1971 Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen Beerenauslese, Adam Albert

This was the dessert wine for me and my mother after Christmas dinner.

The wine's color is deep gold. The texture is distinctly thicker than water, as befits a Beerenauslese. The aroma is very fragrant, rich, and complex. The dominant notes are apricots, peaches, and pears, along with spicy notes of cinnamon and cloves. And honey. And . . . you could get lost in the aroma. On the palate, the wine is unctuous, with flavors that follow the aromas, and brilliant acidity that causes the wine to dance on the palate. The finish opens in the proverbial peacock tail, and goes on forever.

This is a perfect example of why sweet wines from the Rheingau have such a great reputation. Here it is, forty years old, and better than ever!

Triple Curly, with extra woo woo woo!

Never had that one, but I had some great wines from '71, so it doesn't surprise me a bit.
