2010 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Spatlese
Starting to dive into the 2010s now, and with a pork roast on the dinner table this was an easy choice. Pale in color, though not the water shade of some years past, this displayed a steeliness even on the nose. Crisp fruit tones, mineral/salty accents and a lingering talc note made for a bright, expressive and very lively impression. The palate expression was certainly bright, but in no way severe, with the apple/citrus fruit and mineral extract buffering the higher than recent years acids. With the elevated acidity, the wine did not show the kind of sweet impression of so many modern spatlesen, but was more in a classical mold. The one thing the wine lacked was length. I don't know if it was just not there, or if the wine was clamped down under the weight of its acid and extract. Summary is that the wine was very enjoyable and a lovely food partner, but seems to need something to loosen it up to be truly outstanding.
