WTN: Siegrist Pinot Noir

2008 Siegrist Pinot Noir * Trocken –Pfalz, Germany 13,0% alc.

Extremely pretty Pinot Noir. In the early years of last decade, Siegrist made some very concentrated, often impressive, but sometimes clumsy Pinot at the high-end and they didn’t always age gracefully. I have been surprised though at how well some of them did turn out after time in bottle and even the 2003 vintage has had a couple of gems. I don’t know how quickly things changed there, because I don’t have any experience with the 2004-2006 vintages, but today the style seems radically different. The last few vintages have been more about delicate, soft, and perfume but not necessarily subtlety. This wine shows wonderfully fruity cherry and strawberry aromas, some rose-petal, cinnamon, nutmeg and red licorice. Supple and juicy, but softer than a lot of 2008s. It reminds me a lot of the likes of Argyle or Penner Ash as far as texture and depth goes in that it is unabashedly modern, but delicious without being simple.

Cheers,
Bill
