Bob's been pushing Southern Italy for a while, so why not do that for January.

There's no spatburgunder worth drinking anyway...

Where would be the demarcation point? In layman's terms, where is the line between north and south?

Fair question and a point mentioned by Tim a while back. I think we talked about drawing a line east of Rome so anything south!!

Montepulciano d`Abbruzo, Puglia, Sicily, Campania, Basilicata, Ischia (?), Lazio, Taurasi. Probably more if one looks at the map, grin wink. Guess some obscure appellations out there?

If being pedantic I would leave Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Lazio out, considering their character more central Italian. But if people want to include them, so be it. It certainly improves the availability.

Yes, I drove them to the airport this morning, so I can start catching up. We had a New Year's Eve dinner last night one day early so as to do it with most of the family present. The wines tasted much better than those at Xmas :D.

For the short answer, I think Tim hit the nail on the head: Start at the southern edge of Lazio and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.

For the long answer, stick with the forum tradition: There's no rule against making your own call on the marginal cases. Anybody who wants to post a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo needn't be shamed for it.

As someone who constantly says "I know little about Italian wines", I seem to have a few excellent books on Italy in my library. My fave has to be Brunello to Zibbibbo by Nicolas Belfrage, published in 2001. One of two books on Italy by NB, this very readable and well-researched book (500 pages) is full of vague information!. Where else could one read about DOC appellations such as Penisola Sorrentia, Aversa, Ischia, Cilento! Lots of fun, maybe Robin could organize a prize for the most obscure wine this month?

In actual fact, there is quite a good selection of MdA downtown, think I saw at least half a dozen. From $18 through to $25.
The wine/s that caught my eye were the Aglianico, one or two especially from Vulture. Plus there is a sparkling one too. Fun times ahead eh.

Which Bordeaux to open?

by Jim Grow » Fri Jan 06, 2012 4:38 pm

In keeping with my drinking better wine (see previous post) regularly I have some 2000 Bordeaux that I would like to open if any are accessable. What do you all think about the following: (I have 3-4 of each)

2000 Pichon Baron
2000 Calon Segur
2000 Clos du Sarpe
2000 Clos St. Martin

I also could open a 2003 Leoville Poyferre or 2003 Moulin Saint-Georges but figured they were even more inaccessable.
