WTN: The Winery of Good Hope Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2009

by Bruce Hayes » Thu Dec 29, 2011 12:43 pm

WO Stellenbosch

Bright yellow in the glass.

Melon, peach, foral, honey, creamy, very rich on the nose.

Medium weight, peach, mango, lime, quite rich, good cleansing acidity, viscous, a little toasty, juicy, some bitter citrus rind, a big wine.

Toasty, peppery citrus peel, mouthwatering on the finish.

A great little wine.

Screwcap closure.

Purchased at $11.95 (Canadian) and a stunning value.

Which is it- a big wine, or a great little wine (grin)? Truly, I am a big, big fan of properly made Chenin Blanc, which I consider the most versatile white variety. I cannot understand how California could have budded so much over to other varieties. There's virtually nothing left here, except for Clarksburg. Even there, who knows the future?

Craig, I've enjoyed more than my share of Clarksburg Chenins, but I'm afraid none of the New World versions compare with those from the Lorie Valley.

Thanks Bruce, might need to sample alongside the Boschendal or the Mulderbosch!

Carl. I agree. Clarksburg is too warm, with too rich silty soil. but because of the yields and the ripeness, that's where they grow it. I personally like Russian River Chenin, but try to find it. Too much money in everything but Chenin, except Gewurztraminer, which has also seemingly gone the way of all things.
