Question About an Alsace

by Clint Hall » Thu Dec 29, 2011 1:38 am

In my cellar this evening I came upon a single bottle of 2004 Albert Mann Riesling Grand Crus Schlossburg that my notes on the bottle say I bought at a merchant's tasting five years ago and probably shouldn't drink until 2012 or so. Usually on Alsace bottles I also make a point of writing something about the sugar content but apparently I forgot to write that about this one. What do I have here, a typical Alsace demi-sec or whatever?

Yeah, there's probably going to be some sweetness in the wine. Also likely to be extremely floral and lots of peachiness, but it will still have redeeming minerality. 2004 is not the best they've done, but it was okay (especially after the 2003).

The problem with Mann is that, while the Riesling tends to be less sweet than some of their other wines, they do tend to follow the Z-H 'paradigm' of excusing sweetness by calling it terroir and "letting the grape find it's own balance".

So call it "opulent" and gulp it down, brudder. :D
