Calling all Portuguese wine geeks...!

by Paulo in Philly » Sat Oct 28, 2006 12:02 am

Last weekend a friend from out of town gave me a bottle of Quinta do Côtto Grande Escolha 2000, Douro. From what I am reading on line this seems to be a very nice big wine from Portugal. I have tasted some but not that many wines from Portugal. I am planning on opening it on Sunday evening after a full day of singing two services and a performance of Boheme in the afternoon - I will be ready for something that would be intriguing to my brain and palate. Have any of you had this yet?

One of the very best dry red wines made in Portugal, IMO.

Not so big, as it is more traditional styled (or past vintages were) and only made in the best years. I've had a few bottles, but have not tried the 2000 yet (though I do own two bottles of it).

Let me know what you think!

Best,
Joe

Paulo, good to hear from you. The Kirov Ballet is in Ottowa this week. What part did you have in the Puccini?

Joe, I think it is about time we featured Portugal in Wine Focus here. There are so many terrific wines out there.

Never had the 2000. I was recently given a blind taste of the 2001 (I think I posted on it here). I liked it but thought it a bit modern (but not in a bad way). I was then told I might have mistaken the signs of a very ripe vintage for modernity - but hey, when you have a blind taste this happens easily. Knowing the label makes it all so much easier, lol!! ;) On the strenght of the 2001 I would have no hesitation in buying the 2000. Again, if the 2001 is anything to go by, it will need an hour of air to open up.

Sounds like we need another trip down to Fall River. That is the best source of Portuguese wine in these parts. Probably because some Portuguese live there.

Paulo.. opera and Portuguese wine.... how refreshing. I look forward to your report.

We have been drinking more Spanish AND Italian wines, particularly in the value category. I would be interested in getting to know more about Portuguese dry wines, too.

Hope to see you again.. soon.
Cheers, Jim

Yep, or Lowell, Hudson, Arlington... Massachusetts is flooded with the Pork 'n Cheese (myself included) and thus gets some great selections.

I say Champagne should be December and then Portugal and Valpo should come up in January and Febuary. In that order. I would also love to see a month devoted to Loire wines. I have a bunch coming in and I'm about to dive into them head first.

Hey, whatever Jenise and Robin want! If we do Portugal, a nice Vinho Verde and a bottle of Ramos Duas Quintas Tinto or Reserva should be easy enough for everyone to find.

Best,
Joe

No they aren't. :( May something sinister happen to our monopoly.

Okay, here's the plan: For Netscape Wine of the Month, Portugal in general. For WLDG Wine Focus, Port. And of course cross-posting in both directions is permissible. :)

I would like to see red wines from the Douro as a possible Wine Focus as there is an influx of really good wines out there. Hello Robin, are you there!!

It's certainly possible, Bob, although didn't we just do Portugal a month or so ago?

We did Port here and Portugal on the other place where no-one really visited or viewed my notes. Very disappointing as I spent $$$ to participate.
