WTN: 1992 Muller-Catoir Rieslaner

by David M. Bueker » Mon Dec 19, 2011 4:53 pm

1992 Muller-Catoir Mussbacher Eselhaut Rieslaner Auslese
Bronze in color, though that's no shock for a Rieslaner. The aromatics ranto fresh orange peel, spice and something reminiscent of horseradish. Only moderately sweet after 19 years, it was quite refreshing and even more delicious as it warmed up. A very nice showing for a wine from a less well regarded (read: overlooked) vintage.

Hi David -

Thank you for the very nice note. Interesting to get a sense of how Rieslaner can develop over a span of almost two decades.

Man, I wonder what that horseradish is. Those Mußbacher wines can come off a little broad and earthy compared to the vineyards up the hill. But from your note it seems like it still has some life left, but maybe not at its best?

Cheers,
Bill

Rieslaner is not a variety I thought about investigating until trying a 2000 Spätlese (also apparently an unheralded vintage) version of the above, thanks to Matt L., which absolutely slayed. I can only imagine what the Auslese can bring.

Bill,

The horseradish element is something I have run into before with this bottling, notably in the 1996. I certainly would say that the '92 was full of life, though I don't doubt it would have been more interesting 5 years ago.
