WTN: 2010 Magnotta Semillon (Niagara Peninsula VQA)

by Paul B. » Mon Dec 19, 2011 1:17 am

Purchased at the Magnotta retail outlet. 12.5% alc./vol. Synthetic (vinyl) cork.

Medium straw colour. Aromas of pineapple and lanolin. Crisp and pineappley-citrusy on the entry, with more lanolin / wool-like aromas coming in on the mid-palate. Some balancing sweetness, though the acidity is moderate as it is. Quite dry all the same, with consistent flavours on the finish, and a bit of matchstick at the tail end.

Interesting, as we don't see many varietal Semillons in Niagara.

Sounds good. Newer varieties are being made in the area. I don't know if you've tried it, but Vineland makes a pretty decent Chenin Blanc.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Hey Howie,

I've not tried Vineland's - at least not that I can recall - but I did get one from Reif on my last visit in the area. It was good, but a bit pricey, as most of these "specialty" varieties tend to be.

Personally I'd love to see some of the new-generation Cornell hybrids - especially Noiret - in the area. But the will and vision don't see to be there.

I think Vineland is an outfit to keep an eye on.
