2011 Eugen Müller Weißburgunder Kabinett Trocken –Pfalz, Germany 11,5% alc.
A very early release: I’ve heard about a number of pre-Christmas bottlings of 2011 wines, interestingly most of them have been Pinot Blanc. After the very small 2010 vintage that was quickly sold-out, some producers have been rushing the ‘11s so that they have something to sell for the holidays (and with fleshier fish on the menu, why not Weißburgunder?)
Cristal clear and clean as a whistle. This is basically pear over granny smith apple, a little honey dew melon and slightly floral with a snappy finish. Perhaps a tiny bit reductive, but totally finished and a nice match with shrimp risotto. It is on a stretch a little more full-bodied than the 2010, but still retains some acidity. Weißburgunder is generally picked a week or so before Riesling and despite the ‘low-acid’ vintage of 2011, some folks were actually concerned about excessive acid for WB this year where Riesling showed a deficit - go figure.
Cheers,
Bill
