WTN: 2004 Boudreaux Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

by Jenise » Mon Dec 12, 2011 3:51 pm

After a review of this wine convinced me that Washington winemaker Rob Newsom was making my kind of wine, I picked up half a dozen of the 2004 Boudreaux Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon six years ago, drank one immediately and then sat back to patiently wait the better day coming. Last night we finally opened another. Didn't decant other than to ascertain that there was no sediment, and there wasn't. Excellent nose of cedar, black cherry and bramble. Similar on the palate with some savory olive notes and leather playing among the tannins. Not a huge wine early on or now and on the dryer side, it's more about subtlety, balance and depth. Should improve some from here and develop more secondary nuances. The Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Cabernet someone else brought was sappy and silly by comparison.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I recollect having this a couple of years ago and really liking it. Your descriptors nail pretty much everything that made me such a fan of the wine initially - the balance, depth and restraint.

Sadly, I tried their higher end bottling (the 04 Reserve Cabernet) and found it horribly goopy, over the top and marked with VA.

Jenise, Your note reminded me that I forgot to post a note on another Wash. state wine, the 2006 Soos Creek Artist #6 that I had last nite. Still young with mulberry and cranberry nose and flavors with a light dusty quality. Nice. We had this at MoCool also and was much admired by some of the attendees. I'll look for the 2007 and 2008.

I've never had the reserve, but am disappointed to hear it disappointed. I do also have the riper 05 regular which was very different from the 04 on the one taste of it I had but like this, very much a child of its vintage. Should check in on it, as I own half a dozen of it too.

Jim, thanks for the note. I've heard a lot of respect for the Soos Creek but only tasted one once. And that was a good taste; I've just never managed to be in a buying mood when confronted with a buying opportunity. I'm still trying to find that sweet spot between buying/drinking the wines I most prefer while still being a customer of my own state's product.
