WTN: Krug

by David M. Bueker » Sat Dec 10, 2011 8:49 pm

Opened a bottle of the Krug multi-vintage this evening, and it was just amazing. Deep, rich fruit, a precise toastiness and an elusive spice that neither Laura nor I could put our finger on. Stunning stuff that may even justify its price.

Same here, David. Served alongside BV Bollinger and Boillot, it definitely stood out. Even among 5 1996 vintage Champagnes...

I remember a quote from "Wine for Dummies": "We feel sorry for those who have never tried Krug. We feel worse for those who have."

Sounds great. The few Krugs I've had have been pretty incredible.

I've always thought it worth the price. Hard to cough up the money, of course, but for me it has no equal. Wonder how they do that?

One of the best freebies I ever got as a wine writer was a brunch interview with Rémy Krug at the Plaza in New York. I insisted on picking up the tab for my omelet, but he brought the wine. 8)

I was present once when Rémy let us try twelve wines and then made a "mini-grand-cuvée" of them; rarely have I been that impressed.

Last year I was able to get a couple of cases of the MV at sub-$100 per bottle...now the price is about 50% higher. Maybe after the holidays there will be a fire sale. The 1998 is not that much more expensive.

And in the ballpark, Krug price-wise, we had the 1985 Heidsieck Charlie the other night that was just amazing, with big yeasty/bread flavors that paired with escargot very well.... and at 26 it seemed very young.... followed by the 1995 Taittinger Comtes [off a wine list for less than the price of the MV Krug (it was 1/2 off night)] that was bright with more of the green apple flavors that was a nice way to finish dinner. I've got the 1999 Salon waiting to try now.

Dang Jimbo, I'm available for tastings. MV kills the NV imho.
