Which glass with what?

by Covert » Thu Dec 08, 2011 6:29 pm

If one has only Riedel Bordeaux, Burgundy and Chard glasses, which of the three would work best with 1. Northern Rhone (Syrah), 2. Southern Rhone (Grenache and Syrah) and 3. Italian (Sangiovese and Nebbiolo – if one fits both)?

I ask because on Thursday nights my wife and I have departed from drinking only Cab, Pinot and Chard in order to try other regions and types of wines, but we do not have specific glasses for these other regions, yet.

It depends on the wines. If it's a very fine Northern Rhone I would say it could handle the Burgundy glass, but something young or simple might have too many of the warts exposed and Bordeaux would be better. I don't think the Southern Rhone produces anything too 'fine' and there will probably be all that alcohol, so Bordeaux would be a safer bet. Sangiovese and Nebbiolo could probably generally go in Burgundy, for the reasons mentioned above. But there are always exceptions.

If by 'fine' you mean drinkable, sure.

Rahsaan - tread lightly on Salil's latest obsession.

Covert - the Bordeaux glass is a great all-purpose stem, though I would use the Burg glass if you venture into Nebbiolo. The Chard glass will work for virtually any white & even Champagne!

As long as the alcohols are in check, I much prefer burg bowls for grenache-based wines, Covert, so that's my first choice for Southern Rhones where I prefer Bdx glasses for Northern Rhones. It would depend on the particular wine again but my preference is either Bordeaux or chardonnay for the Sangiovese.

I don't get too stem-obsessed, but for me I'd say
Northern Rhone (Syrah) -Burgundy if with a bit of age, Bordeaux if young
Southern Rhone -Bordeaux
Nebbiolo- Burgundy
Sangiovese - Chardonnay (I think Sangiovese outside of the biggest Brunellos doesn't need a huge bowl). Riedel makes (or at least made) a "Zinfandel/Chianti" glass that was 12-14 oz, and one of my favorite general purpose glasses of all times.

Wow, I'm not a Southern Rhone man, but with respect to Rayas, de gustibus ne est disputandum.

Rayas. He's not wrong - it's great stuff, but essentially unobtanium for the most part.

Thanks a lot, everybody. I made notes and will go on to something else.
