WTN: 2005 Château Mouton-Rothschild

by Rainer from CH » Sun Dec 04, 2011 7:04 pm

2005 Château Mouton-Rothschild
Tasted at the opening of an auction.
Deep ruby-black. Forward exotic nose of high-class oak, sweet fruit and alcohol.
Lush neutral entry on the palate. Non-specific black fruits, licorice and baking spice. Silky tannin structure. Perfectly balanced without any hard edges, surprisingly easy to drink. Good but not great density/intensity. Very long on the finish.
Excellent wine but sadly somehow lacking precision, focus, character, freshness and overall complexity.
What I liked most was the seductive notes of white truffle and green tea in its tannins.
However this was no disappointment given my low expectations (and limited experience) regarding Mouton-Rothschild (I only like 1982 and 1986).
In my view USD 150 would be the correct price for this wine. - My personal rating: 94+/100.

Hi David, my TNs might be confusing because I was confused by this wine. :?
Let me try to clarify:
It's for sure a high quality wine thanks to its richness and subtleties.
However I'm missing cut, grip and a unique profile.
I could not distinguish it from a modern Californian Cabernet.

Cheers,
Rainer
