WTN: Beckmen Syrah Clone#1 '09..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Dec 01, 2011 4:47 pm

Tom brought this mystery wine last night:
1. BeckmenVnyds Syrah PurisimaMtnVnyd/SantaYnezVlly (Clone#1; 14.7%) 2009: Very dark color; intense fruit/boysenberry/plummy/blackberry/Syrah/very ripe little oak rather simple/fruit-driven nose; soft/fat/porky rather hot/alcoholic intense boysenberry/plummy/Syrah/blackberry/very ripe bit alcoholic low acid flavor w/ little tannins; med.short soft/fat/porky/low acid intense plummy/boysenberry/blackberry/Syrah/chocolaty finish w/ little tannins; a SummoWrestler rendition of Syrah w/ very intense fruit about all that's going for it.

A wee BP:
1. Tom bought this wine at the tasting room because it got a mid-'90's score from Arpy. I liked the nose well enough, but once it hit the palate; I knew it was not my cup of tea. If this is a 94-96-pt Syrah....I ain't buying. Totally lacking in structure and don't see it developing into anything interesting.

Might that be a function of the vintage? I have a bottle of the '07 version of that wine, which I too bought on the premises after tasting, because it was the only one of their Syrahs that I found at all appealing. Time will tell, I s'pose.

Don't know, Mark. As I rule, I've liked most of the Beckmen wines. This one was just a real dodo.

I had 2007 Beckman Purisima Mountain Vineyard Clone #1 Syrah when I visited the winery last year. I enjoyed it.

See here for a full report: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35915

Beckman's were my favorite Syrah's of the ones I tasted.

For my tastes, I'll take Qupé over Beckmen, but both are quality producers, no doubt.
