WTN: Riesling of the year?

by Andrew Bair » Tue Nov 29, 2011 9:37 pm

Besides being by far the oldest dry German Riesling that I have had, this wine was also incredibly profound. Although it is an undeniable cliche by now, there was a definite Burgundian sensibility to this great Riesling.

1990 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Riesling Auslese Trocken “Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze”
This one-off bottling commemorates when Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze took control of the Bürklin-Wolf estate in August, 1990. The grapes come from top sites in Forst and Wachenheim, and most of this wine was released as a library selection, well after the vintage. AP #01-92.
Nose of honey, pears, peaches, and stones. Full-bodied, bone dry, perfectly balanced, with good tension, focus, and underlying acidity; intense, concentrated, round, elegant, and silky. Displays attractively complex layered notes of minerals, apples, mixed nuts, sap, pineapple, sweet corn, and golden raisins. Impressive length on the finish. Outstanding!

I have not had as nearly many of Bürklin-Wolf's wines as I would like, but hope for that to change in the coming years. Whether I have the patience to keep them for this long is another question, though. :P
