WTN: A stellar riesling

by Tom N. » Sun Nov 27, 2011 10:28 pm

Clear yellow. Fragrant nose of lemons, petrol and orange rind. Outstanding midpalate with razor sharp lemon squirt acidity matching the sweetness. Add in juicy mandarin oranges and pineapple for more layers of flavor. Long luscious finish of lemon meringue pie topped with orange rind shavings. Young tasting wine with great balance.

With food: Excellent match with fresh pear slices as this really enhances the fruit of the wine. Good with carrot cake as this calms the acidity of the wine and gives it more of a petrol taste.

Wine: 2001 Gunderloch, Nackenheim Rothenberg riesling auslese. 10% abv. My second 60th birthday wine from my cellar and it exceeded my expectations  .

Tom, I'm a fan of the Gunderloch Nackenheimer lineup although I can't find them locally. I have purchased some when in DC.

Hi Tom -

Thank you for the great note. Haven't had anything from Gunderloch in a couple of years or so, but their Nackenheimer Rothenberg wines are usually reliable.

JC,

I am a big fan also and I can not get them anymore either. The importer for Gunderloch in Ontario changed a couple of years ago, according to my source (the former Ontario Gunderloch improrter), because Mrs. Fritz wanted to have the same importer for all of Canada. Ontario was the only province in Canada with a different import company. LCBO rarely offers any Gunderloch anymore. :(
