Timing on opening 2001 Muller Catoir wines

by JC (NC) » Wed Oct 25, 2006 5:08 pm

I have a dry Riesling and two 2001 Haardter Burgergarten Spatlese wines from Muller Catoir. I was thinking of opening one of the Spatlese for an Open House this Satuday during my sister's visit. I know it probably could age longer but is it likely to be in a closed phase if opened now?

I had the 01 Haardter Herrenletten Spatlese a few weeks ago and it was not closed at all, I'm guessing the high levels of fruit relative to acid make the MC wines less fiercely shutdown than Mosels. I forget how long I gave it to aerate, but probably not much.

Of course I'm not aware of the vineyard differences between Herrenletten and Burgergarten, but I'm assuming that won't be a dealbreaker?

The '01s are somewhat shut down, but not enough to make the wines less pleasurable. I have been drinking them non-stop since release.

Thank you both for responding. I will open one this Saturday and save the other Spatlese along with the Trocken.

It was, and then I couldn't remember where I had put the bottle to have it on hand! (a senior moment). We had fewer people than expected at the Open House and only opened one white wine--a Tissier Sancerre (Sauvignon Blanc). I am having a second open house in November before Thanksgiving (for acquaintances from work) and will try to locate the Muller Catoir for that occasion.
