WTN: Alsace, Napa, Brunello

A couple of short notes on some of this week's wines.

Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Calcaire 2009 - Medium gold. Rich and a little on the heavy side. Quite sweet which makes it a bit difficult to pair with food. Lychee, pomelo and orange rind which gives it a rather bitter edge to the long finish. Good wine.

Raymond Reserve Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2007 - Ripe and plummy. Sour cherry and blueberry. Medium to full bodied. Rather soft and forward. Very dry and well-balanced. Good length. No "wow" but a good, well-made wine.

Castello Banfi Poggio alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino 2001 - Medium to full bodied, earth, some spice, dried berries, very dry on the palate. Still a bit tannic although the tannins are becoming rather more dusty and fine.Give it another year to soften just a little bit more. Although not too interesting by itself, went perfectly with the roast wild boar.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

I've had a few of the Raymond Cabs over the years and liked them. The first was a 1974 that we had in 1978, which was outstanding. The ones since were all very good, but did not live up to that first one.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.
