Tried last night w/ dinner:
1. Mas d'En Compte Celler Cal Pla Dd'OQ: Priorat (13.5%; 50% GrenacheBlanc) Porrera 2009: Med.gold color; very strong ripe/GB/floral/honeysuckle bit overripe/rotted apple rather smokey/pungent/oak attractive nose; rather soft/fat/porky strong smokey/oak ripe/overripe/rotted apples floral/honeysuckle/GB rather rich/lush slight bitter flavor; fairly long soft/porky strong smokey/oak/pungent overripe/floral/honeysuckle slightly bitter finish; much like a Calif GB but on the overripe side & lots of smokey/oak. $24.00

2. Birichino Grenache VieillesVignes BessonVnyd/CentralCoast (13.5%; 100 yr old ungrafted vines; U/U; www.Birichino.com) Birichino Amico/KingCity NV (L.051811): Med.color; rather grapey/fruity/strawberry/Grenache almost Beaujolais-like/earthy nose; soft bit tannic/bitey attractive grapey/fruity/strawberry/framboise/Grenache slight earthy/dusty flavor; med. pleasant/fruity/strawberry/Grenache bit jammy/ripe slight tannic/bitey finish; a rather old-world style/old-timey attractive Grenache; not terribly profound but good drinking.
$24.00

1. Birichino is a cooperative effort by JohnLocke and AlexKrause, two BonnyDoon alums. The BessonVnyd is just outside the SantaCruzMtn AVA because it's lower elevation. From 100 yr old ungrafted vines I was expecting something a bit more profound. But it's pretty Grenache and rather good drinking.

The Besson Vineyard is, as are so many of the older Grenache vineyards in CA, Grenache Gris.
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Thanks for the info, Steve. That explains the rather lighter color.

We took some budwood from there back in 1989 to graft over a vineyard in El Dorado County, and discovered, to our dismay, the meager pigmentation. There wasn't much Noir around in those days in CA, though there was some pretty good stuff up in Washington.
