WTN: Two Seghesio Zinfandels

by Saina » Sat Nov 19, 2011 12:58 pm

  • 2009 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Old Vine - USA, California, Sonoma County (11/19/2011)
35,50€; re-labelled to 16% abv by the importer or Alko (Finland's monopoly claims to test every wine it sells to make sure the label states the correct alcohol and other details); I couldn't tear it off to see what the original label says. Lots of berry aromas and dark toned fruit, quite lactic / yoghurt-like, no obvious alcohol on the nose - which is in my experience very rare in such high abv wines. It smells very much of Christmas spices and toffee and liquorice, i.e. has some new oak aromas that need to integrate. The palate is very rich but it gladly isn't super-concentrated, it has fair tannins and moderate acidity to help counter the huge fruit. Amazingly the alcohol is well integrated and does not stick out like sore thumb. This is far from my preferred drinking, but I can understand why many will love this wine.
  • 2009 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Home Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley (11/19/2011)
34,90€; 90% Zinfandel & 10% Petit Sirah; re-labelled to 15,5% abv by the importer or Alko (Finland's monopoly claims to test every wine it sells to make sure the label states the correct alcohol and other details); I couldn't tear it off to see what the original label says. This is quite like the '09 Old Vine in being full of berry and dark fruit aromas with quite a bit of spice showing from the oak. Though similar aromatically, there is a touch more brightness and elegance (if one can say that about such a huge wine!) in this one. Very thick and though it has slightly less alcohol (if we believe the new labels!) there is slightly more obvious heat in this than in the Old Vine. Nice tannins with some real grip make this seem like something else than just a fruitbomb. But it is fucking huge - much too gargantuan to bring me pleasure. But at least its merits are obvious enough that even though my preferences are diametrically opposite to this wine's style I can still appreciate that many will absolutely love this.

The site has the Old Vine, but not the Home Ranch. Home Ranch is usually a notch more expensive here than Old Vine. The relabeling of alcohol level is weird, but I don't think it's more than about 0.5% different that what was originally on the bottle. Sorry, I don't have a bottle in my cellar to grab a look. You're paying just about the same as list price here. :|
I stopped buying Seghesio a few years ago when their pricing went upmarket and their quality (which is good) didn't really keep pace.

I believe Seghesio recently sold out to one of the big conglomerates. The family wineries in Sonoma and Napa are fewer and fewer.

I enjoy your objectivity, and your assessments match my experiences with these wines. Which is why I don't buy them either, though zinfandel can be quite good. Would love to see you get your hands on an aged Biale zin because it's a serious claret style you'd appreciate.

I have a bottle left of Joseph Swan Stellwagen Vineyard '01 zin. The label says 15.2%. For me, Swan's Stellwagen Zins have always had a Bordeaux (or at least Cabernet) feeling to them, without losing the essential "wildness" of good Zin.

It's a bottle I need to share....

Hi Otto,

When I tasted the Zins at Seghesio in 2009 I thought the Home Ranch was the best but this would have been the 2007 vintage I think. I tend to agree with you that although the qualtiy is good, but the price has risen higher than the wine quality. I have purchased some Sonoma County Zins from Seghesio recently and they jumped :( to $30 a bottle from $20 a bottle with no real increase in quality. They are riding the wave of being chosen a top 10 wine by Wine Spectator a couple of years ago.

The Stellwagen was always my favorite among Rod's young zins (unless I was holding a glass of one of the others, that is) for it's femininity. Always had a nose that reminded me of Asian things, incense, star anise, shitake mushroom, and the like. That ages out, but his zins do age admirably.

'06 was the end of Stellwagen Zin. Ripped up and replanted with (I think) Chardonnay.
