Two Pfalz, One Glass Cork

by David Mc » Thu Nov 17, 2011 10:52 am

I opened Theo Minges last night and was greeted by a glass cork. It certainly was unexpected and a prelude to a nice bottle of wine.

Here are the two Pfalz I drank over the last week. Go easy on my notes as this is the first 'real' Riesling I have drank and I have no basis for comparison (other than a few bottles of Alsace Riesling)

2007 Messmer Muskateller Kabinett Feinherb
Not sure what to make of this one. It was full bodied and dry but the taste wasn't to my liking. It reminded me of ZH Gewurztraminer in the sense that I'm sure the wine was good but its just a style that's not my favorite. In a previous post, David B. indicated I should drink this right away - perhaps I waited to long?

2007 Theo Minges Burrweiler Schlossgarten Spatlese
Greeted with a glass cork. Full bodied with just a touch of sweetness (is that the Spatlese)? This wine was 'thick' with nice tropical flavors. I enjoyed this one.

The intense aromas of Muskateller, like Gewürztraminer, are not to everyones taste. I wouldn't suspect that it is too far over-the-hill (especially with a little RS) but most often Muskateller is best young (I like it the spring after the vintage.)

Glad that you liked the Minges. Only a few producers in the Süd-Pfalz are better and probably none better for value.

Cheers,
Bill
