WTN: 2010 Dönnhoff Riesling

by Salil » Thu Nov 17, 2011 10:38 am

Bright yellow fruits and minerals; a bit one note but refreshing at first with bright acids, though with air an offputting lactic/creamy element emerges beneath the fruit that has me worried about its development.

Hmm...shades of 1996?

Hmmm, I must have drunk too fast to give the lactic notes time to get out. :)

i'm guessing this is what your phone call was about earlier today????

i had this in late september and found it fat, supple and round. haven't had a chance to try any of their other wines, but i'll be avoiding this basic cuvee of theirs going forward.

Matt,

Avoid the Donnhoff QbA, and you are missing a wine that is nearly always excellent & despite price increases over time still very good value for its quality. I'm very surprised by Salil's note - very surprised.

About the '09 QbA, I recently opined "Is there a better QbA made than this bottling?" I haven't had the '10, but I'd be shocked if it failed to appeal.

hey david -

i shouldn't have said "going forward" as that implies i'll never try it again! personally, i probably won't buy any more of the 2010 Qba - too many other great things out there. luckily, i have some friends that do own a bunch of them, so i'll look in on it from time-to-time.

appreciate your note, David, as the Donnhoff QBA is an annual buy for me and I too was surprised by Salil's note..Over the years you have been a very reliable resource for me in all things Riesling
