Penfolds breaks the $1000/bottle RRP barrier

by David Lole » Tue Nov 15, 2011 8:29 pm

Penfolds have just announced the launch of the new 2008 Penfolds Special Bin 620 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz with a RRP of AUS$1,000.

It is only available for sale at Penfolds Cellar Door, duty free and, three guesses ....... Shanghai, later this month!

Good luck to all concerned.
Cheers,

David

So the new Chinese billionaires have discovered Penfolds? Interesting, and I guess not surprising. I'm trying to remember if I know something about Bin 620--is that what used to be the 'A' bottlings?
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Hi Jenise,

Bin 620 was an experimental Penfolds "special bin" red first made by Max Schubert in 1966. This followed other such wines as the famous 1962 Bin 60A, then an excellent 1963 Bin 61 and a few others I don't recall. The other famous special bin was the 1967 Bin 7. No other special bins were made until 1980 (Bin 80A), then in 1982 (Bin 820) followed by 2 in the great 1990 vintage ... a Bin 90A and a Bin 920. In 1996, Penfolds released a Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet and subsequently have released special bin wine's using the old 60A and 620 bin numbers from 2004 and 2008 vintages respectively.
Cheers,

David
