Oh no, they didn't...

by Jenise » Tue Nov 15, 2011 11:10 am

...yes they did.

They've made a red version of that white monstrosity, Conundrum.

"Caymus 2009 Conundrum RED Blend
________________________________________
FIRST RELEASE! LIMITED!! "Conundrum Red is a non traditional blend of California red grapes. What are the varietals used? It's proprietary and we believe the fun is exploring this intriguing wine. I am proud to be able to continue my grandfather's practices, we are still breaking the rules, three generations later. This wine taste great with many foods, best with highly flavored foods, especially spicy tomato based sauces, dark spices or foods enhanced with BBQ sauce, and really, anything that will fit on your grill. Serve slightly to well chilled. Silky round entry with acid to balance with high fruit concentration. The nose leaves no doubt about the seriousness of this wine. The palate is fruit driven both before and after the high tannin middle core. The finish is long, not drying of tannin, and beckons a second sip." - winery notes

I've had to politely smile my way through too many bottles of it to call it anything else. :)

I’ve never been a fan of the word varietals but thought that’s the word the vino cognoscenti used.

To flog an expired equine, varietal is an adjective; variety is the noun. One can therefore make a varietal wine, but it's made from a single variety.

I'm pretty sure I just saw this stuff in a store here. I remember seeing it out of the corner of my eye and thinking that I'd never seen a red version before. Didn't notice the price and had no interest in picking up a bottle of it.

While I too thoroughly dislike the white version of this wine, I wil confess to having friends (2) who do like it..Will alert them that the monstrosity now comes in red as well..what next?, Conundrum Rose?

Isn't that called White Zin? Or will they call it White Cotes du Rhone?

You're not to blame for picking up on the fact that it's used that way all the time. It's probably the single most misused word in wine by a mile. Still wrong, though!

Conundrum was recommended today in the Examiner free newspaper as the perfect Thanksgiving wine.
