WTN: Rhone quartet

2004 André Perret Condrieu Chery
Beautiful aromatics - perfumed florality, exotic spice and ripe apricot and tropical fruits combining into a lovely fragrance that's hard to move away from. This conveys flavour with a sense of power and weight without ever feeling too heavy or ponderous; perfectly balanced and drinking superbly now.

2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
I wish more CdP tasted like this. Layers of rich red fruits, fresh herbs and spices and savoury earthiness combining seamlessly into a polished, medium weight whole. Everything's in great balance here, and it's drinking very well right now though I expect this has years ahead of it with the structure, fruit and balance to age superbly.

1990 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert
Fantastic stuff, combining black olives, iron, bloody and meaty notes into a seamless, fragrant whole. There's a real polish and finesse to the flavours, bright acidity beneath with the tannins mostly resolved and this is drinking amazingly well with the fruit still fresh but complemented by classic mature Northern Rhone flavours. Great wine.

2007 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot
Double decanted and enjoyed over a few hours; incredibly youthful but so compelling with an incredible fragrance of violets, black pepper, wild meatiness and fresh Syrah fruit. There's a sense of real finesse and polish here; flavour conveyed with a lightness and elegance I'd look for in a top Burgundy. An amazing wine (that I do not own enough of) and I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Some brilliant Rhônes there, Salil.

Having a few vintages of Clos des Papes in my cellar, including 2001, I was rather depressed lately by an overall downbeat TN of a vertical of it on another site (but 2001 not tasted), together with quite a lot of supporting comments in the thread for that assessment. So it's good to read your enthusiastic TN. No hurry to open, I think, so I'll go for 98, 99, 00 before I get to the 01s.

Clos des Papes is currently suffering the dreaded internet wine geek backlash.

I'm no fan of what has happened to the wine since 2003 (though the 2004 is nice), but up to the 2001 it's a brilliant Chateauneuf.

Older Thalabert is the only C-H that I think resembles Hermitage. I love Graillot, but it's great C-H, not H. But the Thalaberts in 80s thru 90 could hold own in blind tasting.

The one time I had the 2001 Clos de Papes (this past spring), it blew everyone away. I had it as WOTN amongst about 18 other top 2001 chateauneufs.

I've had the 2000 CdPapes a few times and that wine has always been mysteriously dull, but the 2001 really delivered.

And it will probably get better.

The 1990 Thalabert is a freak. I've tasted it about 6 times in the nineties and naughties and every bottle was terrific. It doesn't surprise me it's still holding on so well.
Cheers,

Thalabert can be oustanding in some vintages. I had a 1978 about 5 years ago that was astounding. The 1990 has always been very good for me.

I have a case of the 1995 Clos des Papes I came across last night in the cellar while looking for something else - thanks for the reminder, it may be time to pull a cork.

Side question.. I have a few Chateauneuf du Pape in the rack, all 2009s. Should I sit on them for a bit? New to the wild world of wine, been a craft beer drinker for a long time, but I'm finding that I really enjoy wine with food.

Which wines? That is key.

None of those are wines for the long haul. Best to drink them all in the next 3-4 years.
