2010 Lailey Vineyards Vidal

by Howie Hart » Sun Nov 13, 2011 12:18 pm

I picked this up a few months ago at the winery and decided to open it with a dinner of buttered haddock and clam chowder. This is a fairly new winery, I believe they opened in 2008 in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario, however, they've been growing grapes for many years, so the vines are well established. Light golden color with pears on the nose. Just off-dry to perfectly balance the juicy acidity. Long full finish and a very pleasant wine that paired nicely with the meal. I think I paid about $10.

I've enjoyed most of what I've tasted at Lailey, but they must have started the winery sometime before 2008. Visited several times but I am certain it had to be prior to 2008. From what I recall, they had some solid reds. Marynissen was also nearby and had some decent wines - I haven't heard anything about either of these places for some time.

Apparently they started making wine in 2000. I thought they were newer than that because the oldest wine they had was a 2008. http://laileyvineyard.com/about.php Thanks for the heads up. I had their Zweigelt last month and posted about it HERE.

I have come across Lailey here in AB and the wines I have tasted have been very acceptable.
Thanks for the post.

Howie,

Thanks for the note. I haven't had Lailey's Vidal, though I am always on the lookout for Vidal table wines from all Ontario wineries.

Sounds like a winner, and the price is right.

I've always said that Vidal should be considered one of the premier white wine grapes in our part of the world - both for its versatility, but also its ability to make really flavourful table wines (not just dessert wines), for a very fair price.
