WTN: Apothic Red 2009

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Nov 11, 2011 10:23 am

E & J Gallo
California

A blend of Syrah, Zinfandel and Merlot.

Dark purple in the glass.

Medium weight, silky, black cherry, currants, chocolate, quite upfront and showy, good tangy acidity, creamy, lashes of oak, with a tad too much RS which became cloying and annoying after a while.

Chocolate and black cherry on the creamy finish.

I wouldn't buy this again.

Purchased at $15.95 (Canadian).

Bruce,
Thanks for the note. I have tried the '08 Apothic. It too had more RS than I usually like, but it wasnt too shabby (neither over oaked nor cloying). Also, it was only $ 7 or $8.

I had some vintage of other of it in the past year - it was okay but boring. There certainly is a strong market push behind the label. But those Zin blends very rarely work well - don't really know what keeps the category going. But then, I'm an AFWE.
